In this interview, our co-producer Jeffrey Smith speaks to award-winning Kenyan activist and candidate for president in the 2027 general elections, Martha Karua, who is helping to lead a regional campaign to free political prisoners. Major discussion points included the country contexts in Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda—namely, the similarly brazen steps being taken by authorities to clamp down on the opposition and muzzle civil society in the lead up to general elections.
