This week we caught up with the prolific Kenyan political commentator and satirist, Patrick Gathara, for a special follow-up segment to our Kenyan Election Night Special. Patrick is one of the most respected voices in Kenya today because of his unflinching honesty and clear-eyed analysis of the known facts.

During this one-on-one segment, we discussed a host of issues, including the latest political developments in Kenya following the contested August 9 election, his thoughts on the burden that Kenyans ultimately carry given the country’s outsized importance in the region, and the potential signs of hope moving forward for the country.

Patrick Gathara

Patrick Gathara is one of Africa’s best known satirists and political commentators. Equally known for his brilliant artwork as for his insightful analysis and social media commentary, he was instrumental in the creation of the alternative news site, The Elephant, and to promoting freedom of expression in East Africa. He has also contributed analysis on international affairs to highly respected publications around the world, including the Washington Post and Al Jazeera.
